Emphasis was formed in 2003 by Jane Michel and Becky Boston. Prior to this they worked together for many years in Grant Thornton, a national firm of Chartered Accountants, providing strategic and operational HR advice and support to partners and staff. They also have many years’ experience of working with individuals and teams to develop their personal and management skills.
The overarching vision for everyone working at Emphasis is to help work with businesses to succeed through their people.
The team at Emphasis bring a strong commercial perspective to the HR arena. They combine the commercial skills gained from being a qualified accountant or running a business with the experience of providing high quality HR advice and training.
The majority of new work comes from referrals from existing clients and contacts. Jane and Becky are strong believers in the strength of long term relationships and work hard to keep in contact with the people they meet and work with.
Knowledge sharing is actively encouraged within the team pulling on experiences gained from working in a range wide of industries and business sectors. The team work collaboratively both internally and with their clients to achieve the best solution.

Nicki's career in HR management spans a wealth of expertise amongst large corporates, mid-sized enterprises and smaller businesses, across a diverse range of private and public-sector industries. Her natural ability to forge strong relationships with clients, engaging with people at all levels within an organisation, helps them achieve outstanding results in their people management, people development and organisational culture.
Sarah is a passionate HR professional with a broad wealth of knowledge and experience at operational and strategic level across diverse and complex organisations including SMEs, Head Offices, professional and financial services, public sector and not for profit. Sarah is also a Non Executive Director at Solent Mind, working strategically at Board Level to ensure the charity is working efficiently, effectively and to the highest standards.
Jane is a leading industry coach and trainer with a natural ability to engage with people at all levels within an organisation to motivate them to achieve their full potential. Jane’s track record of leading organisations through major change, whilst developing and implementing a full range of effective management and people policies and procedures, is outstanding.
Becky has extensive experience in dealing with difficult staff issues and is known to unravel seemingly impossible situations, to successful conclusion through conflict resolution and workplace mediation.
Wendy is extremely efficient and has a practical and comprehensive approach to dealing with the day-to-day, as well as complex employee relations issues. Wendy is able to step back and look at the people strategies as a whole, and how they link to the goals and objectives of the business.
Emma has a broad-based background in marketing and business development, bringing a wealth of experience from diverse industries. She is a highly creative marketing communications and digital media professional.
Amy’s role is interesting and varied, from accounts, including invoicing, processing direct debits and reconciling accounts, to day to day admin and interacting with our clients in a friendly and professional manner.
