Redundancy, Furlough and Notice Periods

Redundancy notice period and the furlough scheme

Redundancy notice period : can employees remain on furlough during this period?

Whilst Coronavirus and the Furlough scheme has caused a lot of confusion amongst employers and employees, this is the number one question we get asked at Emphasis HR & Training.

Redundancy notice periods are a complex topic and never more so that when you combine it with furlough scheme. However, in short, yes, you can keep employees furloughed during this period.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Ensure you top up your employees pension payments to 100% of their salary. This is the most cost-effective way to keep redundant staff on Furlough (we do not advise you place employees on gardening leave at this time)
  • With regards to holiday, you are entitled to ask staff to take any accrued and/or untaken holiday during their redundancy notice period. Just make sure you give sufficient notice, twice as much notice for the period of holiday they are taking
